Dorian's eyes rolled up and down the cheap plastic rack, in search of a colour that matched his soul. His mind was bewildered by choice. Each pair, unique in form and garishness, seemed already to belong to some other era. Some white ones, reminiscent of a 60s pussycat, bubbled with an innocent hedonism. Directly above laid a pair of imitation ray bans that reeked of a pretentious cool. Nestled somewhere in between, a glint of ruby caught his eye. His head tilted and a look of curiosity crossed his brow. There was something enchanting about the dark flowing frame, barely ensaring the seamless shine that glinted over the pinkish lenses. He felt his head drawn closer as his eyes tried to make sense of the ethereal feeling emanating from the shade of deep ruby. Without warning or command, his fingers rolled over the top of the frame, then around to the bottom. They were warm. He picked them up and rolled them over in his hands. There was a strange weight to them. He brought them to his face. The plastic arms pushed against his temples. They were obviously made for someone with a much smaller head. Perhaps an Asian. This minor fact, however, was irrelevant, and completely eclipsed by the image that now flashed in front of his retinas. Everything and nothing had changed. A vague tint of red coloured the wall of bric a brac, and he found himself wondering how lucky he was to have stumbled into such an unwitting treasure. He turned around, and walked towards the door. The thought of paying had not crossed his mind. As he strolled out into the sunshine, he caught the brief scent of blooming flowers.
The street was filled with a meandering nonchalance, and as he surveryed hs surroundings, Dorian wondered why he hadn't noticed this earlier. He took a deep breath, feeling the perfect crispness of the air as he sucked it into his lungs. He felt the warm tingle of life inside his chest as he began to exhale. But before he could finish this perfect moment, he felt a jolt and fell face first to the ground. Casually, he flipped onto his elbows and, still lying on the warm pavement, glanced up to see who had run into him. A woman stood there, looming into the clouds like a dark skyscraper. She was wearing a severe dark dress, and stood indignantly as she glared down at this odd looking, audacious stranger who had dared to get in her way. She opened her mouth to start her well worn tirade, but before her sharp tongue could start cutting, Dorian smiled widely and said,
"Hey! I'm Dorian!"
Her eyes squinted and she pulled her head back in a confused shock that she immediately tried to hide as she remembered her anger.
